The Hunger Games, more like, The Hunger Lames

The recently released Hunger Games movie has become wildly popular since it's release, grossing 337.1 million in the U.S. alone. But is all the fuss really worth it? After reading the books, I'm unsure whether the movie portrayed the book's story accurately. My sister is raving about how fantastic it was but I think it really played to the reader's favorite parts of the book. The whole beginning half of the movie portrayed life in the capitol. Moviegoer, George Cardozo said "They dressed like Lady Gaga" and "There wasn't enough fighting for my tastes". I partially agree but this opens up the debate of the difficulty of portraying plots from books in 90 minutes, the average length of a feature film. However, despite this, the movie has been wildly successful and we can surely expect a sequel to it. It will be interesting to see how well they integrate the next books plot into a movie that still is pleasing to the average moviegoer. We can probably expect more fighting in the sequel which may play more to people like George Cardozo's tastes. So ask yourself this--What purpose does a movie really serve? Is it better for a movie to be gnarly and disregard the plot to please George or for it to follow that plot as closely as possible? JACK OUT.

Pulp Fiction Gnarly!

This weekend I watched the highly acclaimed film Pulp Fiction by the director Quentin Tarantino. My mom had said that it was one of the most violent and worst films that she had ever seen so I went in expecting something close to Machete by Robert Rodriguez. this was the second of the two Quentin Tarantino films that I have seen (Inglourious Basterds) so I did not go in completely blind to his directorial approach but I was surprised to say the least. The movie was fantastically done and the characters were so accurately portrayed that I forgot I was watching a movie. I was actually surprised at how little violence was in the movie and after talking with my dad I think that the reason that my mom did not like the movie is because the actors were so real and that the movie actually seemed like a documentary. Out of the whole movie the last scene is definitely my favorite because of the interaction between the characters in the diner is hilarious. I also thought that the use of comedic relief after the OD scene ("I hid this in my butt hole for seven years") shows how good of a director Quentin Tarantino really is. I would recommend this movie to everyone over the age of thirteen and would suggest that all people that are interested in making film should watch this movie and use some of its techniques.

The Three Stooges? Gnarly!

Sean Hayes at the release of the movie (Credit to IMDb)
The Three Stooges was originally a comedy skit that I myself have seen before and found fairly humorous, but now there is a whole movie that is basically just one large skit. After learning that this movie is a reality, I do plan on seeing it, and this blog post can be my hopes and fears of such a comical adventure. <3
My hopes: Well, I hope that the movie is as funny as their performances, but that's fairly obvious of a hope. I actually haven't been to one of their performances in a few years, but I do remember them being very entertaining and enjoyable, which I hope is what this movie will remind me of. There isn't too much for me to say, other than the plot sounds promising and will keep my knees chapped (from slapping).
My fears: My initial fear is that Sean Hayes comes out of the screen and strangles me with his sexy hair. Other than that, I'm just afraid that it's going to be an over-hyped comedy that doesn't live up to expectations and is quickly forgotten.
All in all, I don't care about IMDb, because I know, deep down, that it's going to be funny and I'll enjoy it. PFEIFFER OUT

Finally, a legitimate horror/comedy movie...

Credit:http://tinyurl.com/d3jugjm
This weekend, on Friday the 13th, I saw The Cabin in the Woods, a legitimate horror-comedy movie that really has a new take on the genre. This is no Scary Movie, The Cabin in the Woods is a legitimate horror movie, that still manages to be very comedic at the same time. This movie is really a case of, "the less you know, the better", so I won't go into detail about what happens in the movie, but it's pretty much your average horror movie about a group of young people staying in a secluded cabin in the woods(very similar to the most recent Friday the 13th film). Basically, the first half of the movie is pretty much an explanation of why the same events happen in every horror movie, and why the characters always make the same bad decisions(such as "splitting up to cover more ground"). While having a very comedic side, this portion of the film still manages to have several good thrills. The second half of the movie is almost a behind-the-scenes take on what is really going on mixed with some strong action elements. The ending of the movie is very good, so I won't spoil it, but I will say that you probably won't expect it. If you don't mind a little(more like a lot of) blood and would like to see a good movie, go see The Cabin in the Woods,  you won't be disappointed.

21 Jump street? Gnarly!

The two cops in the movie (credit to IMDb)
Okay, let's get straight to the point. 21 Jump Street is a comedy action thriller. It isn't intended to have a deep or fulfilling story. Now that that's out of the way, let's continue the review. 21 Jump Street is a movie about two bike cops who fail at busting a couple members of a notorious cartel in a park, thus getting them transferred to a program from the 1980s where cops are inserted into high schools to crack down on the drug trade. While there, the two cops get to re-do high school (them in their senior year was the intro to the movie) and learn how much school has changed since they were in it. They get into the opposite cliques that were intended, and basically switch roles from when they were actually in high school to now. It's funny. It is guaranteed to give you a good, hard laugh, and the comedy goes through the entire movie. Some people prefer the comedy to stop for a while near the climax to make the plot more appealing, but this movie doesn't.
Now to jump to the verdict: This movie is incredibly funny, has interesting action scenes, but has an odd setting. The high school just doesn't seem believable, with its backwards sense of popularity. All in all, it's a fun movie to watch, just don't laugh too much -wink-.
