Are video games the new form of storytelling?

The recent announcement of Assassin's Creed 3 has started to make me think about what impact video games have on the future of movies. Video games used to just give players a basic story that let the players have a basic idea of why they are doing the tasks in the game, but lately video games have been treated as movies are, with writers, scores, and even actors. The Uncharted series has been compared to the Indiana Jones franchise, and video game award ceremonies have been getting more and more similar to the Oscars with awards like best acting performance and best character. The Assassins Creed games are an example of a series that was designed to tell a story, they were originally designed to be a trilogy that told the story of Desmond Miles, and has stuck to that. With the release of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood Ubisoft(developer) introduced a multiplayer element, this was highly popular amoung players, but didn't has the same cinematic feel as the single player campaign, so, with the release of Assassin's Creed: Revelations Ubisoft added a story to the multiplayer by telling the tale of an Astergo agent that relates to the single player.

  1. I used to be an assassin like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
